Soon, Gram Vikas initiated other activities. They helped form a Village Education Committee whose prime task was to ensure education of their children. The VEC began the task to revive government school which was not functioning properly. A ‘gaon sathi' or a village in charge was placed by Gram Vikas who had to teach the smaller children. They have recently finished constructing a cyclone shelter cum community center which also acts as a classroom for the tuition classes.
Earlier Gram Vikas insisted on imparting non-formal education which was more relevant to the tribal lifestyle. But, it soon changed its stance and decided to introduce the mainstream system of mass education. Gram Vikas tries to revive as much as possible the traditional values and culture in their education endeavors. For example, the traditional language of these people is the ‘Qui' language. It is dying out with the present generation. Gram Vikas is trying to teach a little bit of this language before it totally becomes obsolete.
