The people

The Pozhikkara slum was a fishermen colony and all of the 55 families had fishing as their main occupation. They were all below the poverty line. They did not have proper access to protected water supply and proper sanitation facilities.

As the inhabitants were all fishermen, it was not thought to be practical to relocate them somewhere else away from the sea. Hence, it decided to rehabilitate them there itself. The land originally belonged to the Collector, which was distributed among the people. Each family was given 2.5 cents of land, which approximates to 102 square meters or 1,100 square feet. The total area comprising the slum was 0.750 hectares.

The people are satisfied with the internal planning of the house but not with their surrounding. Moreover, the people in the back row are not happy as the wind from the sea is blocked by the row of houses in the front. As the construction process was on, everyone wanted their own house to be completed first due to the fear of the Government abandoning the scheme mid way leaving them completely houseless.
