UNDP works on the grass-roots level with the Government officers and other partner organization, using the schemes and funding they offer for their habitat development activities. In order to make this development self sustaining they undertake the following activities
Promotion of appropriate technologies
Selecting a set of cost effective, disaster-resistant, appropriate building technologies that are suitable for the context.
Preparing a task force of United Nations Volunteers (Architects, Civil Engineers, Planners, mostly local) and training the UNVs in the use promotion of these technologies.
For effective technology transfer, preparing a team of Artisans, chiefly masons, both men and women by training the masons in the use of the appropriate technologies.
Habitat planning and development
Conducting the exercise of resource mapping which includes analysing the current situation and making a master plan for future development.
Conducting a detailed vulnerability study and formulating a Community Based Disaster Management Plan for every village, and also at the Gram Panchayat, Block and District levels.
Using the available housing and infrastructure development schemes, building the infrastructure facilities and constructing buildings such as community centres, schools and individual houses with community participation.
Generation of livelihood options
Creating a federation of Self-Help Groups for the artisans for generating employment and livelihood options.
Facilitating women's empowerment by forming women's Self Help Groups and introducing the concepts of Micro Credit, Micro Finance and Micro Enterprise.
Promoting the IT and Communication in the rural areas to bridge the digital divide by helping to set up IT kiosks and giving training to the youth in the use of computers.
Forming a learning platform
Creating the Orissa Appropriate Technology Forum, OATF, as a platform for research, propagation, institutionalising and dissemination of appropriate technologies.
