Report on the Awareness Camp held for Masons at Thazankuda Village, Cuddalore District and at Akkaraipettai Village, Nagapattinam District

TNDTF conducted these awareness camps with the objectives of building knowledge among masons regarding good construction and disaster-resistant practices, generating
awareness about different disasters faced in the area and effects of disaster on buildings and to facilitate improved livelihood opportunitie.

Thazankuda is a small village situated near Cuddalore town, adjacent to the sea. It is a beautiful tiny village with a population of approximately 1989.

Tazankuda is the Model Village among the Tsunami affected villages. Mr.Bill Clinton, UN visited this village last month during his visit to India. 20 masons attended the masons’ training programme ,including 2 building contractors.

AKKARAIPETTAI is a small village situated adjacent to Nagapattinam town. It is about 2Kms from Nagapattinam main road. The total population of the village is approximately 12,000 and most of them are fishermen.

His Excellency, President A. J. Abdul Kalam and also Mr. Bill Clinton, former President, USA and many other political leaders have visited this village. The awareness camp conducted by TNDTF was the first awareness camp for masons in the whole Nagapattinam district.

24 masons attended the masons’ training programme including 2 building contractors.

The training programme in both these villages provided the msasons with technical know how regarding good construction and disaster resistant practices. The masons appreciated the training programme and there was a lot of positive feedback.
